Good day men! I hope you all had a great day, and a better weekend. I had an avg day at the gym. Today was DL day. I did ok, not good or great. Here's what I did followed by some remarks.
95 x 10 (will go up to 135 after the meet. 135X8 155X5 185X5 245x3x1 250x3x1 250 (bombed) 250X1X1
I bombed on my second set of 250. It was supposed to my last set, but I didn't like the taste of failure so I went one more set, and could only manage one rep. The problem was not strength, but form. I was to far away from the bar.
I did some shrugs at 145X8X3 Lat Pull Down 90x8x3 Good mornings 65x8x3 Tricept extensions 35x8x3
I will not do assistance work again till after the meet, and will start do singles on my heavy sets from now on. So, I guess I am starting to taper.
I started taking Pro-Nos yesterday. It has taken about 3 drinks to get used to the taste. Anyone use it? I am not sure how I like it.

Hi Jeff, I didn't want to take over your post regarding prayer before I work out, but I appreciate the prayers. I'm excited about what happened today. The devil had been trying to talk me out of praying. I will tell you that doing so in public is extremely difficult for me. I've always been very uncomfortable not only praying but just talking in front of people, so I can always find an excuse for not leading prayer. We squatted today at 4:00 P.M. and the Lord give me the courage to speak. There were four of us today, two squatting and two helping. There were also another couple of lifters in the squat room. I told my training partners that I wanted to start a new tradition for our workout sessions. I told them I wanted to pray before we worked out. The four of us huddled together and I led in a short prayer. One of my training partners said it deffinately wouldn't hurt to pray. I'm not saying our day went exceptionally well because we prayed, but me and the other lifter had an exceptional day. The other man that squatted is a 148 lb. class lifter, with suit on and straps up he went 450 lbs. for a double. Yes I said 450 for a double. His name is Phil Duke, Jr. For those that have Decembers Powerlifting USA you can find him on the 148 top 100 list. He is drug free, only 20 years old and was number 30 on the total. Me at 220 lbs., 60 years old and lifetime drug free went to a 550 lb squat. I blasted it out of the hole. One of my spotters asked me what I was on, I suppose I was on a high for the Lord. Ted

95x10 135X10 160X5 190X5 260X1 265X1 270X1---This felt very heavy.

Bryan, I am beginning to think that the sqaut is going to be my best lift because of my body type. I ran for years---ultrarunning. I attempted to run across Arkansas back in 2000, but due to poor planning---I ran it in June---which is way to hot in Arkansas. I became dehydrated and suffer a couple of leg problems. I made about 150 miles. I said all that to say that my legs are short and strong (5.3 150 lbs)

Pastor Jeff, 270 IS very heavy! I don't care who it is, that is a good pile of weight. For some it's just a lower percent of their 1 rep max, that's all. I really like seeing you progress toward your meet goals, so keep up the awesome work! And stop running so much, you make the rest of us look bad.
;')
God Bless.

I gave up running after two trips to the hospital. I must confess I loved trail running. I like being out in nature. I'll have to tell you one day about my encounter with a bear. All I can say is I was confessing my sins, and some I didn't even committ.

Squats and I don't get along, so I don't do them for competition.

The Lord was very gracious to me today by allowing me to have a great BP day.
95x10 110X5 140X5 170X1---very easy 180X1 185X1
I was so pumped I tried 190 but couldn't get it up---I knew I shouldn't have tried a fourth set.
I met two guys from Team Impact at the gym today. They are Christian group of strength atheletes (SP?) who are going to minister at an area church this week.

Two weeks till my first meet, I am excited. Today was DL and it was ok, nothing great. After the normal warm-ups: 260X1 265X1 (very heavy) 270X couldn't make it. Even though I didn't get 270, I feel good about where I am with all my lifts. I don't expect to break any records this year, maybe next My workout partner (I blv the Lord has provided me one) is getting interested in the sport. He told me today if it wasn't for the Squat--He would do the meet. I told him he could do a push/pull, NASA---Powersports, or even just the Bench. God Blessings to All Jeff

Hi Jeff, you are already at close to double body weight on raw deadlift. That is fantastic. I've missed some in training and then had a great day at the meet. The adrenalin will get you going at the meet. Ted

Thanks Ted and Bryan for your posts. I am very pumped about the meet. Here's are my work out plans for next week---the last week before the meet.
I am going to sqaut 250, 275, 285 or 300?
BP 160, 185, 195
DL 245, 265, 270
I read someone where that on the Monday before a meet one man likes to go in and lift all his opening lifts on Monday and than take the rest of the week off---What's your word on that?

For the week of the meet, you should not tax your body. In my younger years, I might do a squat and benchpress on Monday for a single, even less than my opener and Wednesday, I used to do a light set of 5 reps with about 50%, then nothing on Thursday or Friday. Certainly, do not deadlift.
Now, being older, I take my last heavy deadlift about 3 weeks out and speed pulls at 2 weeks. Last squat one week out. This is usually 50-60% unless I'm having gear problems and need the week to fine tune. Last heavy bench is about 10 days out with a deload bench and light accessory work on Monday or Tuesday before the meet. Then rest the next 4-5 days.
Remember, everything is subject to change. Once you gain a little more experience, you'll know what your body needs to do to compete at your peak level.
