Doug, I am in agreement with you. If he can do 250 for 3, then he should be able to get 300 for 1RM.
Pastor Jeff, Just make sure that whatever you want to open with that you can do it for 4 reps in the gym. This is just to make sure you can get your opening attempt. Trust me on this one.

Hi Jeff, I agree with Bryan, but I've always used an opener I could tripple in the gym. This has never failed me in my career, except one time on the bench in 108 meets. I f you just did 250 for three, I believe that would be a great opener at the meet. You could then hit around 270-280 on second then 300 on the third. This is just a suggestion and not set in stone. Keep up the good lifting. Also remember that sometimes after a meet we sometimes get what I call the powerlifters blues. You accomplish what you set out to do, your pretty much sore all over, and you are thinking what now? Take a week off, set new goals and get back to the gym. A friend once told me that doing a three lift meet was like being in an automobile accident. He wasn't bad wrong. Ted

Ted, I know what you mean. I had one meet like that, but it was in deadlift. I was attempting to open with 385. I can do 465 but it just would not move. Nothing left in the tank that day and I wasn't going to pull something. It is better to scratch than to injure yourself. If you really want to be sore, attempt a strongman meet. I have done one. Normally after a PS Meet, I sore for about 2 days. After the strongman, I was sore for almost a whole week.

Please forgive me for asking alot of questions. What is CNS? Also please pray for me I have a type of personality that when I find something I like---I go over board and can make that an idol. I was greatly convicted this morning when I found myself thinking more about lifting, than about the Lord.

I had another good day at the gym. I did 165 x3x3. It was fairly hard. Next week I'll just do singles and no support exercises as I get ready for the meet on the March 23.
85X10 will probably move this up to 95 or 105 after meet 105X5 135X5 165x3x3
Dumb Bell Presses 50x8x3
Shoulder press 25x8x3---I'll move this up after the meet.
Front raises 12x8x2 and 15x8x1.
God Blessings to All Jeff

Hi Jeff, I know what you mean feeling convicted about powerlifting. I was thinking the other day and I could not remember the last time I prayed about my daily workout. I should take a minute before my workout to thank God and ask for his blessing as I lift. I have prayed that I would do God's will in my lifting career, I've also prayed before meets. I didn't pray to God to let me set a record, although I dont think thats wrong, but I pray for all the lifters safety, my safety, that everyone would conduct themselves in a sporting manner, and that I would be satisfied no matter the outcome. I have always tried my best to keep my priorities in order. This has included getting home in the wee hours of Sunday so I could be in Sunday School. If you prepare your sermon, pray, do Bible study and the other things as you did before powerlifting, I would say you still have your priorities in order. I love powerlifting, but my love for my God is on a plain way above that, and I'm sure your at the same place. Don't ever be afraid to ask a question. Sometime I'll tell you about my first meet and why I'm now committed to helping anyone that asks. Sorry for the long post, Ted.

Good point, Ted. I pray before the workouts for God's strength and safety. Then after, I pray to thank Him for doing that. I look at lifting as part of my daily quiet time with the Lord.

Amen to that! Since I go to a gym I also look at it as a chance to minister and/or witness. Every workout is a blessing and a reason to give thanks! Thanks for your post Bryan. God Bless.

I appreciate the insights men. They have encouraged me and challenged me. BTW, My chest is sore today. I forgot to mentioned that I have been doing a 2 second pause on my bench presses---those things definitely make my chest sore.
What do you think about this for new support exercises after my meet?
Narrow Bench Incline Bench
what else?

Hi Jeff, as assistance exercises doing close grips (various width grip) and inclines are good. As you get a little older you have to be careful with inclines they can be a little rough on the shoulders. Listen to your body on this and you should be O.K. Thanks everyone for comments on prayer before workouts. I feel the Lord is leading me to lead in prayer with my training partners before we work out. I'm going to squat tomorrow and pray that I'll have the courage to do it. I'm very freightened to lead prayer outside of my Sunday School class (I'm comfortable with them). Ted

Narrow Bench Incline Bench what else? My chest workout is as follows: Bench Press Decline BP Incline BP Dips I do one set to momentary muscular failure. On the regular BP, I then also do two pause sets [15 seconds rest] to attempt to get one more rep each with near perfect form.
