Hey Gang. Do you like to remember things from the past? Well I certainly do. Often my mind is in 3 modes. Past present Future for many reasons. But let's forget for the moment for the basis of the topic of this Thread Remember The times. . I like to try to remember places, people, clothes, movies, music, restaurants, and all eating places. But my memory is only so well. And I only go as far back so many decades. I can 't round up these things all by myself. . My fiancee a little older than me remembers some places I have never seen . So your memory may not be all what it remembers. But I enjoy hearing these things almost as if new experiences. Do you like to remember the past? Well join us here and I'll tell how this posting works. One poster at a time is to recall anything from the past. But it can only involve one thing at a time on each post. . If one said remember restaurants with parking cars and roller skates? So you can only on that post present that memory. Anyone is allowed to participate as many turns as they want. . But one topic on each response because someone may just steal everyone ideas. Well, we don't want to take away all the fun. . You only have to wait until one other person has posted before you can post your new Remember this thread. I know now some of you are going to know more than me memory wise and probably have more on their list stacked up higher. . That's ok. This is not a competition. Although it would be nice to get a a trophy. Another words it's all for the fun of it. . I will start of with the first one. By the way anyone is able to make comments to any previous poster. But each time you post try if you can to add one new something or someone on the list if possible. . But most of all if you don't have new ideas then just post to what you have read and keep the topic active. Here is the First one....... Do you remember or did you also have Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor? When we were kids our Grampa George took us over to Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor. . At this time there were people wearing those band looking hats for money of those classic Dixieland horns and piano music look some of these workers had. As a kid to me this was entertaining. It reminded me at being at an amusement Park. Don't want to say which one to spoil the topics. . When a person had a birthday they would start using some kind of whistles and drum sounds with coming by your table. Then to sing the person a happy Birthday song. . Friends this was sincere people actually giving you a good time. . . Today you would have to force people to be this generous to customers in they way these workers presented themselves. I don't come back from a true Early aspect. But I was the last generation perhaps to be able to see a glimpse of this before it would fade. Once when my sister was little she was crying when they were making all that noise for her Birthday. As for me I don't remember having my Birthday there. . But I do remember their tasty Fudge Sundaes. Grampa was so fun to be around. He was funny and entertaining to all of us at every age. He helped to bring Life into things . I have to make strong emphasis cause if Grampa was not around we would not have been going to most of these fun places we did. My Mom and my sister liked to get Banana Splits. While me and Grampa got our Fudge Sundaes. It was easier to talk to these workers back then. They were not rude or pushy as today. At Farrell's it felt like being the guest of an Ice Cream Parlor hoping again we will be back another time. . Whether any more of these exist I don't really know. . Ok that is the first remember post. Who would like to be next? Remember try to keep this at one topic at a time to allow everyone to share their ideas and memories to the topic. www.farrellsusa.com/

Boy those were the days of good memories for me. I remember Farrells quite well as it were yesterday. They no longer exist here in my area but see that they still exist in California. Boy is that state lucky. That ice cream parlor holds a very treasured memory for me of one moment that I can remember about my Mom. The one thing though was because it was so packed at times you would have to wait quite a bit to get in or that it was so noisy some had changed their mind and had left. I was there a couple of times with my childhood friends also. I wonder to this day also if they make the same things like back then or is anything different? Now the something new I would like to post is does anyone remember transistor radios? My brother, sister and I all had one when we were kids. We all wanted to hear something different and kept arguing about who gets to listen to their songs. So for one Christmas my Mom bought us all different color transistor radios red, white and brown. I had the brown one, my sister had the white one and my brother red. I was just happy to have one and felt very special and traded with my brother because he couldn't stand the color red. It was funny sometimes that the 3 of us would be in 1 room with 3 different channels going at the same time. My brother and I are most alike and I have to admit most of the time he had the better music on. Those transistors even in this day and age could come in handy in the event if a person loses their electric because it only took a 9volt battery to work. link

I don’t believe any of us had any small transistor radio on us. But I do remember on the Brady Bunch when the stamps were going out of business. All the kids were walking in line behind Greg with this little radio of the station announcement. . I also seen one on Gilligan's Island and by no surprise the same producer Sherwood Schwartz who happens to be well for props and ideas to makes these programs even more interesting.
But at home we had an am Fm Radio with a record player on the top. This also had a 4 track tape player. These tapes are about 1 third size of a Video cassette tape. Each side having 4 songs. Kenny played his rock music on there plus his records. It's the first stereo I remember us having.
Now instead of having transistor radios Grampa got us from his work Sony Walk mans. Did anyone ever have a walk Man? These were the 80's version of Transistor small enough to fit in one of your pockets. Me and my sister used to go jogging with the music blasting in our ears. This was a lot of fun. . it was only a radio with no tape player. I only used a walk man during exercise. Because something had to get or keep me motivated.
Lastly we did for a short time have one of those small 12 inch rectangle tape recorder. We got tired of that because as kids it is fun at first. But when better radio recorders came out one seeks the quality of better sound. . That’s why I relied on the Fischer stereo in the family room. . Here I did my radio tapes, practice Beat Box and then my brother to take over with his Rock music. And then my sister to take over with her Girl love Songs and Girl Pop music. At least I can tell that was her favorite. I was into all mainstream Rock, metal, Pop rock, Rap, soul, Disco, and everything pretty much in between radio stations.. I come from a family of music. So I have a large collection of classic songs in my head. My girlfriend is surprised by memory alone I can remember all these things. . . Yes because to me these were the days. That’s why I started this thread. It’s all about good memories. Would you like to build on the music aspect of memories. What do you remember about music?

I could go on and on about this topic.. But instead I will just make a comment or 2 about music.
First I have liked music ever since I can remember. My first memory of music that I can remember though is that of my Mom singing. She wanted to be a singer and never followed through with that dream. Instead she had gotten married and had a family instead. Then my second oldest brother wanted to be a rock drummer and had 2 bands but that faltered for him.
But I always liked music and heard so many kinds of it that everyday from some source I heard music. Music can always be a source of some emotion you may be feeling. It could be either good or bad for you.
I used to have 8 tracks, 45's and 33 1/3 albums, cassettes, Now in todays time there are CD's, MP3's, cloud player and so much more. Time will just keep inventing how to make music.
To me music IMO was always a good thing for me except when I was listening to the wrong kinds of it. I was not always a Christian and never would believe that God would be strict about it. But then again what music you listen to also reflects the image you give of God.
So a lot of the music that I once listened to I don't any longer and I have cleaned up my act tremendously. Don't get me wrong I still listen to the worldly music but it's just not as bad as used to be.
I think music in some form or fashion will be a part of my life until the day I pass. I'm thankful for music.
Now which brings me to talk about the cost.. I remember when to buy a 45 it would cost $.99 but now to buy any kind of music cost anywhere from $15-$19. What do you think about the cost of music or anything about money in general?

I remember!!! I saw you mentioned Farrell's Ice cream shop. I remember them well! We used to go to Farrell's in Downey, CA after our football games on Friday nights. Our High School was Lynwood High - and Downey was right next door. Used to love Farrell's - with the troughs...and getting the ribbon if you ate it all! Well, Farrell's is making a come back! There's one in Orange County that we've been to - and one in Brea. And they're building a new one near Knotts Berry Farm on Beach Blvd. I'm really looking forward to this because it's only about 2 miles from our home here in Anaheim!!

Two summers ago I went to the Farrell's in Mission Viejo, CA. My family had been out of town and I was alone...so I jumped on the Freeway and headed there - it was the closest one and I was excited to go 'back in time' to 35 years prior to check out Farrell's. Well, it was pretty amazing that they were having a grand opening. They had news trucks, promotions, give-aways, raffles, etc.
I only had to wait about 15 min in line - but was seated and so I checked out the menus - I chose a medium sized ice cream dish. I think it had hot fudge and nuts...very good. One thing that amazed me was how noisy Farrell's is now. I guess aging with do that to you - but it was all good! A girl came around and asked if I'd like to buy some Raffle tickets. I said sure - and bought like $10 worth.
So later they did the raffle - and I ended up winning a gift certificate for a Zoo (big bowl of ice cream they deliver on a guerney) - jand also a signed jersey from one of the Anaheim Angels. I felt very blessed and couldn't wait to tell my friends and family!! My first visit to Farrell's in over 35 years was a blast!!

Well I remember that 2 of the times I was at Farrells was to celebrate my birthday. I remember the Zoo ice cream quite well and it was the hardest thing to get through. But now it leads me to ask does anyone have any birthday memories they would like to share here? Birthdays are a great thing when you're a kid but as you get older for some reason you don't look forward to them quite as much. So do you have a special birthday or birthdays you would like to talk about?

My Birthday falls in December. Because it is in the same month as Christmas and New years it was hard to plan a party mostly because of Christmas shopping to how much one can spend. So rather it was often celebrated in January. Usually I would be at the skating rink one night. That was my weekend hang out with all my friends and the kind of music that I listened to in those days. My Grampa actually played music for the skating rink. Grampa had a whole collection of music back from the 30's to the late 80s. At that time he then retired from playing music for other people. Well just a couple of random weddings he had done after his music playing days for other people. . Grampa kept up with all the latest newest hits. Those were the fun days cause he could pack the whole floor crowded snack bar. Later on a dance sock Hop in the middle of the Oval area. I was into Break Dancing back then. But I never could compete with Mario and some of his friends who were fantastic Break dancers that could be in a movie. Mario taught me how to spin on my back. He may also have taught me now to do the dolphin which was one of my most favorite break dance moves beside spinning on my back. I could never get the flair down right. But I was good at spinning on my hand. Cause I was light for one. I was an amateur never a great Break dancer or popper but that was so fun to do.. As this was a typical night for me on the weekends. So Grampa would bring me back home. And then suddenly everyone comes out surprise Happy Birthday!. The best of it was my whole immediate family was there. I did not care about my friends being over then. . I think Birthday means Family and good memories more than anything else. I just wish really someone in those days had taken a lot of pictures or Video movies. Because I can not remember this in best detail. . My mom made either white icing with white cake. Or Lemon cake or chocolate on my Birthdays. Mom always made sure to remember our Birthdays. Some of the most simplest gifts I remember more than some of the more expensive things I have gotten. . This was in January and not December by then Christmas was over and New Years day. Just to yet look forward to a Birthday after these fun Holidays. . I was never a party animal. So there were never drinks and stuff like that. My parties always cake, ice cream, punch, gifts and decorations. . I could not ask for more than that. If anyone asked me if I wanted a 200 dollar Gift instead of my family and these simple ideas I would say forget the expensive gift. My Family this simple Birthday idea makes me a very happy Kid at most. . We were not rich . neither were we poor. We were in between. . Things were just fun at most at home. Because at one time we used to be a one big family..
