My first bodybuilding show was a success. I won my class and was 3rd among the 5 novice class winners for the novice overall. I wanted to give thanks first to God for innumerable blessings and also to Bryan who has given me a great deal of advice that has proven very useful. I'll try to post pics whenever I get them back.

The only downside is that now I can no longer compete as a novice and the guys in the open and elite classes were incredible. It's going to take some training to get there. But I learned a lot from this experience.

Congratulations. When is your next bodybuilding meet? Are you doing a powerlifting one before it?

Thanks everybody...it was a lot ofd fun...I'm hooked. Tom, I am actually doing the IBP meet in Asheville on the 25th, so if you're still going, I'll see you there. The next bodybuilding show I am doing will be on October 6th in Marietta,GA. You should come and watch...they are a lot of fun. They said that every show they had done this year, including the one I was in was completely sold out - there were probably around 500-600 people in the audience at this one. So if you come, get a ticket in advance, but definitely come - you will have a good time! Bryan, I got some feedback from the judges. They said I needed to start my diet sooner, and I need to improve my posing to be better prepared. I knew they were going to hit me up for posing - but you have to live and learn I suppose. I've started hitting all the mandatory poses, including some special ones I do for the night show, and the relaxed pose after every workout. I've been trying to hold them tight for around a minute...it's easier said than done.

What is your current percent bodyfat? That will tell you when you need to start dieting. Here is a rough chart to give you an idea of when to start, depending upon where your %BF is at: October-07 3% September-07 4% September-07 5% September-07 6% September-07 7% September-07 8% August-07 9% August-07 10% August-07 11% August-07 12% July-07 13% July-07 14%
That is good to do your practice posing at that time, but make sure it is workout specific. For example do the most muscular and side chest poses after a bench workout. It will allow you to stress those specific muscles when they are already exhausted. This will make it easier at the contest time. Of course practice the "relaxed" poses after each workout. These are the hardest and most important, despite what you may have been told. They will affect your overall score more than any other individual pose.
How is your mass and symmetry? Do you have any measurements to compare?

Bryan...thanks for the chart - that will be very helpful. I'm at around 5-6% right now. I had planned on starting the diet after the Aug 25th bench press meet I am doing in Asheville, but if this is fairly accurate, that means I can do a little more building before I start dieting - that's a good thing. I am so ready for the next show. I really enjoy powerlifting too but there is a great rush from being on stage.

It is accurate in that 1% if the most bodyfat that you can lose per week safely. You can lose more, but that is not safe. After the August 25th meet, get with me and we will attempt to revamp your training so you win again. We will work on whatever your weaknesses are - symmetry, size, etc. For right now, just try to get stronger and a little larger. Enjoy eating! LOL!

Thanks Bryan - sounds good, and I appreciate that a great deal...your coaching paid huge dividends last time! I'm really enjoying the additional food right now. I'm still being careful not to let my diet go completely. I seem to do better with diets when I can ease into them.

I am not interested to get into body building contests. But I would like to know about bench press contests. How do I get into them? Also are there other weighlifting contests too like how much you can squat or curl or anything else?
If anyone knows or can lead me the way please let me know. Thanks Trebor

There are a number of contests and organizations to get involved with ranging from beginning level to the most advanced. I recently did an IBP meet in Winston Salem that featured the bench and the curl, and I think the next day they had a full meet. Off hand I can think of IBP, APA, AAU, USAPL, IPF, NASA and SPF just to name a few. Here are some links: www.ironboypowerlifting.comwww.nasa-sports.comwww.southernpowerlifting.comwww.aaupowerlifting.comLike I said there are many, so pick an event that you think might be interesting and go for it! Best of luck, and God Bless! William

Check out NASA (Natural Athlete Strength Association). I think you might enjoy that organization and it offers many different types of competitions.
