I was curious to a couple of serious health issues related to lifting weights. I have heard for many years that hernias and hemorrhoids are due to lifting heavy weight. I am curious to if a lifter can still compete competitively if either hit them. Does anyone on here admit to either coming on after they started lifting? I am worried about both myself!
God Bless, Mike

Hi Mike, I'm 60 years old and 220 weight class. I did my fist meet in 1984 and will do my 109th on the 17th of this month. I deffinately handle pretty heavy weight for a semi-old man. I did my heaviest days last week in preperation for my upcomming meet going to a 550 lb. squat, 400 bench, and a 550 lb. deadlift. I've never had a hernia so I cant speak about that. I do have the second problem though somewhat mild. I had this come on after many years of competing and training heavy. Mine have never got severe enough to do anything major, although it is somewhat uncomfortable at times. I have known other National class lifters that have had the same problem, but like mine it didn't get bad enough for them to do anything either. At my age I would have probably ended up with the same problem without ever lifting a weight. Many of my non-lifting friends my age have the same problem, Ted.

Mike, I have been blessed to not have either. But, I agree with Ted. This is not a lifter health issue. I think you see this same thing more with non-lifters. The same is true with joint damage. That is "lifter issue" but I see more non-lifters with joint damage than I do lifters. Personally, I think too many issues come into play - daily life, genetics, dietary habits, etc.

Mike, I ran for many years and the last few years before I quit my knees hurt most of the time. They continued to hurt after I ran, but now that I have been lifting they do not hurt when I walk or even better when I climb stairs no aches no pain. I believe my lifting has strengthen my knees to the point they just don't hurt.

I agree with Bryan AND Ted. It's more a "health" issue than a "powerlifter health" issue. The fact that we pick up heavy stuff makes us succeptible (that one will never make it past spellchecker) but no more so than say a construction worker who never works out.
I have known lifters who have had both or either, and continued to lift. I also know one guy whose doctor told him to never lift heavy again due to both. He genetically had weak connective and other tissues, making this a "health" issue made worse by picking up heavy stuff.
God Bless.
