Islam is a monotheistic religion originating with the teachings of Muhammad, a 7th-century Arab religious and political figure.
Name
The word Islam means "submission", or the total surrender of oneself to Allah. An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim, meaning "one who submits (to God)".
Doctrines/Beliefs
The Koran is their holy books, superior to the Torah and the Bible.
They also see Abraham, Moses, Hebrew prophets, and Jesus were all prophets of Islam, but their message and the texts of the Torah and the Gospels were corrupted by Jews and Christians.
The Five Pillars of Islam are five practices essential to Sunni Islam.
The shahadah, which is the basic creed or tenet of Islam: "I testify that there is none worthy of worship except God and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of God."
Salah, or ritual prayer, which must be performed five times a day.
Zakat, or alms-giving. This is the practice of giving based on accumulated wealth, and is obligatory for all Muslims who can afford it.
Sawm, or fasting during the month of Ramadan. Muslims must not eat or drink (among other things) from dawn to dusk during this month, and must be mindful of other sins.
The Hajj, which is the pilgrimage during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah in the city of Mecca. Every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it must make the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in his or her lifetime.
In addition to the khums tax, Shi'a Muslims consider three additional practices essential to the religion of Islam.
jihad – "to strive or struggle"
Amr-Bil-Ma'rūf - the "Enjoining to Do Good", which calls for every Muslim to live a virtuous life and to encourage others to do the same
