JUDAISM Origins According to Jewish tradition, the history of Judaism begins with the Covenant between God and Abraham (ca. 2000 BCE), the patriarch and progenitor of the Jewish people.
Name Judaism is the religion of the Jewish people, based on principles and ethics embodied in the Bible (Tanakh) and the Talmud. After the restoration from the Babylonian Captivity, the nation was predominately known as Judah [the southern kingdom faithful to the throne of King David and his descendants]. Hence, the name of this faith is based off this name.
