Origins
Depending upon which historian is consulted, there are three main views on when the Catholic Church began:
1. With the Apostle Peter in 33 AD
2. With the Edict of Milan in 313 AD under Roman Emperor Constantine I
3. With Pope Leo I in 440 AD
Name
It refers to itself in its relations with them as either "the Catholic Church" or "the Roman Catholic Church". The term ¡§Catholic¡¨ means ¡§universal¡¨. Sometimes the church will refer to itself also as ¡§One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church¡¨.
Doctrines/Beliefs
1. The Roman Catholic Church is Christ's one true church established in 33 AD.
2. The Pope is a God-appointed head [vicar] of the church on the earth.
3. The teachings and decrees of the Pope as equal to the Bible in authority.
4. The Roman Catholic Church as the infallible interpreter of scripture.
5. That tradition is equal to the Bible in authority.
6. There is no salvation outside the Roman Catholic Church.
