Origins
As a movement traces its origin to the work of two men:
Huldrych (or Ulrich) Zwingli (1525¡V1609) - The German-Swiss Reformation
John Calvin (1534¡V1564) - The French-Swiss Reformation
Name
It is also known as Reformed tradition, the Reformed faith, or Reformed theology. They wanted to ¡§reform¡¨ the Roman Catholic Church, not start new denominations.
Doctrines/Beliefs
The distinctives of Reformed theology can be stated in a number of ways. Here are the main ones:
1. Sovereign grace ¡V God is completely sovereign
2. Life is religion - theological system and practical theories of church, family, and political life
3. The five points of Calvinism, which can be remembered by the English mnemonic TULIP are:
Į Total depravity (or total inability)
Į Unconditional election
Į Limited atonement
Į Irresistible grace (or efficacious grace)
Į Perseverance of the saints (or preservation of the saints)
Subdivisions/Splinter Groups
The Dutch Reformed churches have suffered numerous splits and unions. Currently existing denominations are:
Į Protestant Church in the Netherlands (PKN) formed in 2004 from the union of
o the Dutch Reformed Church (NHK),
o the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (GKN)
o and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Kingdom of the Netherlands (ELK)
Į Christian Reformed Churches of the Netherlands (CGKN)
Į Reformed Churches of the Netherlands (Liberated)
Į Netherlands Reformed Congregations (GG)
Į Reformed Congregations in the Netherlands (GGN)
Į Swiss Reformed Churches
Į Lausanne Free Church
