II. CONTEXT TO THE BIBLE AS WHOLE
What Does This Verse Mean In Context To The Book It Is Found?
This epistle deals with worship and service, both corporate [congregational setting] and private [every day life].
What Type Of Book [Historical, Poetry/Wisdom, Prophecy, Etc.] Is It Found In?
This is an Epistle of Paul. An epistle is a letter written to a specific church [Ephesus, Corinth, Rome, etc. and/or individual person [i.e. Timothy, Titus], with overtones and/or principles to all believers.
Who Was The Original Audience [Israel, Church, Individual Person, Etc.] That God Gave It To?
The church at Corinth
Under Which Covenant [Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic, Messianic] Or Dispensation [Innocence, Conscience, Government, Patriarch, Law, Church, Kingdom] Was This Given?
Messianic Covenant [New Testament Covenant] and dispensation of the Church Age
Why Did God Originally Give This Verse?
The ladies at this church were violating Romans 12:2, 1 John 2:15, and James 4:4, let alone not submitting to the proper hierarchy of authority as established by God. This deals with the issues of conforming and submission as well as appearance [i.e. modesty].
Did Moses, David, Solomon, Or The Prophets Write Anything About In A Topical Fashion?
Not directly. Here are some references in the Old Testament of either a covering or a veil:
Į Mitpahath (Ruth 3:15; "sheet" or "apron"). In Isaiah 3:22 this word is plural, rendered "wimples"
Į Massekah (Isaiah 25:7; in Isa. 28:20 rendered "covering"). The word denotes something spread out and covering or concealing something else (comp. 2 Cor. 3:13-15).
Į Masveh (Exodus 34:33, 35), the veil on the face of Moses. When Moses spoke to them he was without the veil; only when he ceased speaking he put on the veil (comp. 2 Cor. 3:13, etc.).
Į Tza'iph (Genesis 24:65). Rebekah "took a veil and covered herself." (See also 38:14, 19.) Hebrew women generally appeared in public without veils (12:14; 24:16; 29:10; 1 Sam. 1:12).
Į Radhidh (Isaiah 3:23). The word probably denotes some kind of cloak or wrapper.
So, even though there is no direct commandment in the Old Testament, the practice is recorded.
Did Jesus Or The Apostles Say Anything About In A Topical Fashion?
Only Paul talks about this directly.
How Does This Fit Into The Context Of The Biblical Doctrine As A Whole?
It deals with the following principles found in the Bible:
Į We are to glorify God, not ourselves.
Į We are not to model ourselves after the world.
Į There is a God-given hierarchy in life and we are to submit to it.
Į There is the Biblical principle on modesty.
