1. Don’t argue. You never get anywhere arguing. You will put a barrier between the sinner and yourself. Either agree with him and go on or ask him if you can “set that question or issue on the shelf.”
2. Don’t talk over his head. Don’t use big theological words that he does not understand.
3. Don’t talk down to the sinner. That is, don’t act self-righteous and pharisaical (that you are better than he is). Remember that you are a sinner saved by grace.
4. Don’t get sidetracked on opinions, doctrines, or sins. Always answer his or her questions in a way to lead the conversation back to the Gospel.
5. Don’t put him on the defense. Do not criticize or condemn his religion or opinion or you will put a barrier between the two of you.
6. Don’t start frying the fish before he is landed. That is, don’t try to get him baptized and in the church before he is saved.
7. Don’t be rude to the sinner. Don’t talk to the sinner in his home like the preacher would preach from the pulpit.
8. Don’t embarrass him or you will certainly make him resent you, thus forfeiting your opportunity to win him.
9. Don’t salve his conscience by implying that he is a good fellow. He must be made to realize that he is a lost sinner.
10. Don’t be guilty of having bad breath or body odor.
11. Don’t preach for or against any denomination. The convert will usually do what you want him to do after you win him to Christ.
12. Don’t let him do the talking. Once you sharing the Gospel, stay in the Scriptures.
13. Don’t take their excuses seriously. Don’t call them a liar, but let their excuses go in one ear and out the other.
14. Don’t be harsh like an attorney on cross-examination. Show tenderness and love for the sinner.
15. Don’t let the “Silent Partner” interrupt the presentation of the Gospel. Decide which one will do the soul winning and the other “sit back” and pray.
16. Don’t try to get the sinner to have an experience like your. Give him the Gospel and get him to seek Jesus, not an experience.
17. Don’t push the sinner beyond his measure. Your part may be to sow seed or to water. The increase may come later.
18. Don’t scold the sinner for not “seeing” all at once (not understanding).
19. Don’t be dogmatic over doubtful things (controversial or political issues).
20. Don’t try to get the sinner to give up certain specific sins. Show him he is a lost sinner and needs to repent and turn to Christ.
21. Don’t raise unnecessary objections.
22. Don’t look upon any as hard cases. There are not big sinners or little sinners, just sinners.
23. Don’t tell them to think about it awhile. Always ask them if they would like to receive Christ now. Attempt to draw the net.
24. Don’t wear out your welcome. If you notice he is restless and keeps looking at his watch, make your graceful exit. In doing this, you will leave the door open for another visit.
25. Don’t operate on last week’s soul winning experience. Get with God in prayer and win a soul to Jesus each day.
