So your at you're local LA Fitness or World’s Gym. You are looking around the room. You notice that some of these lifters are taller than you are. You may also notice some of them are more developed in muscle definition and or size. You may also look around to see some lifting more than you can. So you go home and start to think. I can’t smaller or less defined than these other lifters let these people lift more than me. .
I am going to go at full speed and I am going to catch up as fast as I can and then I am going to pass them up. . Then soon in time they will respect me. They they will think I am the best lifter or one of the top lifters around the Fitness center or Gym. This is not usually the reaction for those who just want to tone up or slim down. But this thinking I describe usually fits into those lifters as Body Builders and Power lifters.
Body Building and Powerlifting are 2 competitive sports. Both Body Building and Powerlifting take a lot of time lifting and progressing to new levels of achievements. Many of us who have not been in a true competition show still feel in the world we need to compete at those places where we often do our work out routines.
I am considered a semi body builder and semi power lifter combo. I practice both ways of lifting. Some High sets and some max sets. I may never be built to win a body building contest professional. I will never win a Powerlifting Bench or Dead Lift contest. Should I put my head down in shame? Not at all. Because workouts is a statement that speaks out about us. Our routines should be personalized only to ‘our’ goals. I am content and happy to be a semi body builder and semi powerlifter. .
For I have done both Body building and power lifting practice. Yet I am only happy if I practice both of them. I asked some lifting members here what would happen if I joined a Bench pressing contest? I was relieved to hear from the board members that all I had to do was show up and lift. . Even if I can bench 135 pounds on the bench no one is going to look down upon you. For in fact they will see you had the courage to join the contest and show up. . This of course is sound advice from Shane, Mike Doug, jimray, pitbull, Tom Isbell, and gonzomedic.
Because here at CPOA we encourager and not discourage. We are not running to seek power in this world. . We only share the power of lifting God has allowed to each one of us. At CPOA we help one another to reach their goals and achievements. . We are in fact a minority among worldly Lifters who seek self power and self glorification. . But we CPOA members those who work out at the gym or enter a contest we represent Jesus Christ our Lord first before we represent ourselves. We give God thanks to our ability. Even imagine some who can't walk or can't properly use their arms. .We should feel blessed we are able to do these things. And we should pray for those who are not as able. For even as Jesus was able to walk Jesus healed men who could not walk.
Mark 7:31-37
New King James Version (NKJV)
Jesus Heals a Deaf-Mute
31 Again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came through the midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee. 32 Then they brought to Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Him to put His hand on him. 33 And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue. 34 Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”
35 Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. 36 Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it. 37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
I used to go to the Gym before I was a believer. I compared myself with all the other Lifters. Sure it motivated me to try a lot. . But my friend Tim is a Witness, that I got too carried away. . I would stack pounds on all the machines. Tim would say Hey trebor slow down. Why are you always lifting so much? Take some time to lighten up. I did not listen to Tim. . I wanted to win that one day. I would beat anyone around me. I became jealous when some could bench 50 or more pounds than I could. . I am going to catch up. Then I said to myself. I am going to be the top bencher. I’m staying High on the weight and I am not lifting anything light. It turned out to be a big mistake. I was risking myself too much. I almost pulled out my my tissue between my biceps and forearms by constantly trying to do extremely heavy pull down cable. I injured my shoulders by trying to lift too much up right parallel raises for deltoids strength.
And then I attempted lateral dumbbell fly with a large amount of weight. Tim was not there. But I pulled my rib bad. I had to go to the emergency room. . After that night it hurt to do all lying down exercises if my rib expanded. I got hurt because my problem was ‘Pride’. I was too worried about everyone else how much they can lift. Knowing at my height I would never be the tallest. Knowing in my set frame I would never be the biggest. So I think by strength I can try to beat anyone at any size. .
How do we correct this? Go int the Locker room by the sink. Look at your self in the mirror. Say then I am the only one I need to compete around here. When you learn this rule you will learn to be more safe and slow down. If your competing yourself you're no longer in a sprint to lift more than everyone by the end of the year. You need to personalize your schedule times and routines. Don’t plan from a year down the road. It is smarter to make a weekly goal plan. If you plan a yearly goal your expectation may be just to high or even sometimes too low.
Your goal is to beat yourself from what yo did last week. If you curled 50 lb Barbell one week maybe the next week you can try 55. But only because you are competing yourself that's if you are ready. Cause there are weeks when we don’t advance to new levels. . Some weeks need to be repeated pretty much what we did by last week. We can still try to do more reps if not more weight from last week to beat ourselves..
I have used the beat your self technique and it not only works but I automatically start passing other lifters up. Because I am more patient and persistent because I am my best challenger. So I know when to slow down and I know when when to pick up. I know if I am having a bad day or a good day. Everyone is personalized to what I can and can not do. . No more comparing what others are lifting. . I won't slow down because some are behind. . I won't speed up because some are ahead. I just go at my pace that which I know works best for me...
So all in all if I were to bench 225 and the next week I could bench 230 I am happy and content I beat myself from last week. Who cares about that guy who can bench 405 lbs on the bench? What is my hurry to catch up with him? That is his Life. I probably don’t even know him. That was his goal and that’s where he got. I am at my goal where I had gotten. Don't compare don't his 405 but compare 225 your lift last week and 230 lift this week. And next week you will try either higher weight or even just a few more reps of the same weights
Some how you want to improve. But remember there are flu seasons and all such things. Every week is not going to be the best. You may drop 25 lbs of strength after being sick. Just go back and climb up again. This is God’s world and God owns all these plates. . So our workouts is our time, place, goals, and achievements. Concentrate only to win against yourself. You will start to feel much better every week the new levels you continue to reach.
