Can you give us some background information (age, weight, where you are from, what you do for a living and your family situation)?
Mike, I am going to be 48 in April, born & raised in Philly, currently living in Quakertown, Pa.
My weight at recent competition was 209, up from my old days comp weight of 198.
I am a calibration tech, currently working at GlaxoSmithKline in Northern New Jersey.
I have 2 older kids from my first marriage, and my current wife, Kelly and I are raising her 3 boys ages 14-20.
When did you get saved and how?
I was saved when I was 8 years old when there was a special speaker at my church.
I went forward, prayed the sinners prayer and accepted Jesus as my Saviour.
How long have you been powerlifting and do you compete in other sports?
I have been competing in PL since I was in my early 20’s, so over 20 years.
I do not compete in any other sports, but I am an avid fisherman & hunter.
What denomination of Church do you attend?
My church is non-denominational ( Harvest Community Fellowship), but I have a Baptist background
What are your best lifts in competition?
I have squatted 551, benched 385, and deadlifted 620.
Who are some individuals you look up to in religion and powerlifting?
Paul Anderson was a real hero in both of these departments, a tremendous lifter and a great example of a Christian as well.
How do you balance powerlifting into your life being a Christian?
I always put God first. PL is my main way of keeping in shape physically, and I think spiritual fitness is even more important.
Do you train others or are you a trainee?
I am currently helping a few people develop programs through my website and personal contacts. I am Studying to get my personal fitness trainer cert this Spring.
What organizations do you lift in?
I used to compete mostly in the USPF, but just joined the WNPF.
What is your favorite Bible verse?
Romans 8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to [His] purpose.
What is your favorite food?
Alaskan King crab legs, I guess.
What kind of workout do you currently use? Ex..Westside, Progressive,etc.etc.
Right now I’m trying to recuperate from some minor injuries, and need to trim a few pounds to try and get my blood pressure to a better level. Accordingly, I am doing higher reps, light weight with a little cardio thrown in.
I guess you would say my normal PL routine has been linear progressive periodization, but I’m trying to tweak it these days, as the gains seem to get tougher at this age. I recently tried the 3 steps forward, 2 steps back periodization idea and think it has some potential. I just need to customize it to work best for my needs.
What version of the Bible do you read most often?
Probably New American Standard
Favorite Religious and non-Religious book you have read (other than Bible)?
I have recently been reading John Eldridges “Wild at heart” book as part of a men’s group study. It’s a great read.
On the lighter side, I really enjoy Patrick Mcmanus’ outdoor humor books, like “Rubber legs and Whitetail hairs”
What is the most exciting thing you have witnessed God do?
In my own life, I was a real prodigal for many years. God spoke to me in a very real way when I was in my thirties. I re-submitted myself to his will, and have been learning to submit more and more as I go. I went through a divorce from my unsaved ex, am currently married to A Christian woman, attending a great gospel preaching church, and am really growing spiritually recently. God never ceases to amaze me with his grace and blessings!
What is your favorite lift?
Deadlift
What manufacture of powerlifting equipment do you wear?
The only thing I really use is a belt, and recently added wrist wraps on the bench.
I have an Inzer blast shirt and squat suit, and groove briefs, but have not worn any of these in years. The meet I was recently in was a “Raw” meet
What is your favorite religious song?
I have heard a very moving version of ‘My redeemer lives” that almost brings me to tears every time I hear it.
Who is your favorite music artist?
I have very eclectic tastes, too many too list.
What weight class do you compete in and do you hold any state, American or World records? I’ve competed in 198’s and 220’s. No records yet!
As a “Christian”, what is your view on Anabolic Steroids or Anabolic Androgenic Steroids?
I have used them in the past, but currently and for many years have been drug free
I feel training natural is safer and healthier and sustainable for the person who wants to train right into old age.
Whom is your favorite apostle and why?
Paul was the biggest missionary ever, and kept on going despite a handicap, persecution, etc. A real hero of the faith.
Do you have any final comments?
I think your site is great. We all need to proclaim our faith boldly, to show people that Christian Men are REAL MEN and can do great things without resorting to cheating, with God’s help. We need to support each other and continue to stand for real truth, without worrying about being PC.,
Thanks for taking your time to interview me!
