THREE REASONS THAT JESUS DIDN’T HAVE LONG HAIR
Most people have seen the pictures of Jesus – the one with the handsome white man with long, sandy hair and blue eyes. Is this an accurate picture of Jesus? No. Let me give you three reasons why these are false images:
1. Historical Description
All pictures and sketches that were made of Jesus during the first three centuries [e.g. catacombs], all depicted Jesus and the Apostles as have short hair and being clean-shaven. The idea of long hair did not come until later centuries.
2. Cultural Description
Jesus was a Jew. No pure Jew would have white skin, blue eyes, or sandy-colored hair. He would have had olive-colored skin [maybe darker due to the climate], dark eyes, and black hair. And most Jews kept their hair cut short. During the time period that Jesus lived, it was part of the culture for men to have short hair. Look at the pictures of Julius Caesar to get an idea of how short the hair was typically cut.
3. Biblical Description
The Song of Solomon tells us in eleventh verse of fifth chapter that “His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven.” In other words, Jesus would have shiny, curly, black hair. We also know that Jesus would not violate Scripture [which He is the Author]. Look at 1 Corinthians 11:14 “Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?” Do you know why Jesus is not handsome as the pictures are? Isaiah 53:2 “For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.”
