Today when we think of a Jar it might be a cookie Jar or peanut butter and Jelly Jar. . Most Jars at the stores are made of Glass or plastic for food and Various items. .
But Jars were just as important in Biblical times. even back as far as Genesis 24:14. . These jars were mostly used for storing things.
Most Jars in Biblical times were made out of Pottery Clay. . The Storage Jars varied in different sizes. Farmers at Harvest time would store Grain in them. This would also keep the insects and small animals from not eating them up.
Many Traders who had to travel long distances used these jars as well. These Jars were good both for storing dry or liquid products. . The Jars could help the Liquid to stay cool and not to evaporate. . Traders could sell these prducts inside the jars. for then the products are better preserved and in good condition.
.There were some Jars that were made Large. these large Jars usually had a collar rim at the top. and on each side would be a handle to carry the large Jar. .
During The eras in Which King David and King Solomon ruled it was common that A Jar Handle may be stamped with Royal Approval. and also a stamp where the Jar was manufactured. .
There were 4 main cities who made most Jars. There were in the center of Israel. One was Hebron, another was Ziph, a third was Socoh and lastly Memshath. .
often times Jars were also used to Hold Scrolls. for example The Dead sea Scrolls were stored in Clay Jars.
Now there were Jars that were made small and with different material. most people could not afford these. but mostly The rich could. . There were Metal Jars. that I am sure that could help keep things hotter or cooler. . they had glass Jars. There were also jars made out of Ivory. and lastly some were made out of Albastar. some Jars like these contained rare perfumes and ointments or annointing oil. . .
